United States: Carol Weitzel, Former Pennsylvania Chief Of Tax Litigation Joins Reed Smith State Tax Practice
Last Updated: August 8 2017

Reed Smith LLP announces the arrival of Carol Weitzel as counsel with the State Tax group in the firm's Philadelphia office. Weitzel brings more than 25 years of state tax experience, most recently serving as Chief of Tax Litigation in the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office.

"Carol brings extensive knowledge of Pennsylvania's tax policies and procedures regarding tax settlements and litigation," said Lee Zoeller, head of the Reed Smith State Tax practice. "Her 20 years of experience as Chief of Tax Litigation and skill as a litigator make her a tremendous asset. Carol will help us to more effectively and efficiently assist our clients with their Pennsylvania appeals."

Weitzel will focus her practice on providing advice on Pennsylvania tax matters and advising clients on state taxing authorities, policies and procedures.

As the Chief of Tax Litigation, Weitzel represented the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in tax appeals before the Commonwealth and Pennsylvania Supreme Courts, worked as a liaison to reconcile interests of both taxpayers and the state's Department of Revenue, and represented the Department of Revenue and Commonwealth in bankruptcy and tax collection matters. Prior to that, she served as acting and deputy secretary of the Board of Finance and Revenue, and was Assistant General Counsel of the state Treasury Department.

In 2016, she joined the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's subcommittee to its Appellate Procedural Rules Committee and has been involved in reviewing the state's statute governing the review of appeals from the Board of Finance and Revenue.
