United States: Experienced Attorney Joe Tirone Joins Womble Carlyle To Lead International Energy Transactions Efforts
Last Updated: July 21 2017

BALTIMORE—Joe Tirone, a highly-regarded and experienced energy project and infrastructure development attorney, has joined Womble Carlyle's burgeoning energy practice. Tirone's focus on transactions in the energy sector will enhance and complement Womble Carlyle's already strong team that provides comprehensive services on regulatory, environmental, real estate and construction aspects of energy projects.

In early June, Womble Carlyle announced that it would combine with the leading U.K. law firm Bond Dickinson to create Womble Bond Dickinson.  Among its other notable practices, Bond Dickinson has one of the largest dedicated energy teams in the UK doing projects all over the world.

Together with his new Womble and Bond Dickinson colleagues, Tirone will spearhead the combined firm's efforts to grow a leading global energy practice.

Tirone has more than 25 years in the energy infrastructure and project development sector, including serving a stint as in-house counsel to a large independent power producer. His specific experience includes counseling clients in the coal-fired and natural gas-fired electrical generation, petroleum, hydroelectric, biofuel and renewable energy industries on projects such as:

  • Financing and building new facilities in the U.S., Europe, Asia, Africa, South America and the Middle East;
  • Negotiating complex power purchase agreements, EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contracts, electric and gas interconnection and transportation contracts, major equipment procurement and service agreements, fuel supply arrangements and other mission-critical agreements;
  • Selling and acquiring energy industry operations and manufacturing divisions;
  • Completing joint ventures on behalf of U.S. energy companies with their international counterparts; and
  • Developing, constructing, and operating power generation and cogeneration facilities throughout the U.S.

Tirone also counsels electricity and natural gas suppliers on regulatory compliance and commercial matters.

"Womble Carlyle and Bond Dickinson are already heavily engaged in the global energy sector. As the two firms combine, adding an attorney with Joe's deep experience, contacts and leadership abilities will be a significant strategic boost to Womble Bond Dickinson's capabilities enabling us to participate in the largest and most complex transactions in the sector" said Keith Mendelson, leader of the firm's Corporate & Securities Practice Group.

Baltimore Office Managing Partner David Hamilton said, "International energy transactions already are a growth practice for the firm and the Baltimore office. So the timing of Joe's hiring couldn't have been better. Joe has a broad and deep range of experience and industry contacts in the energy sector and will be a great asset for our clients."
