Australia: Corrs pioneers financial inclusion focus in legal industry
Last Updated: 11 July 2017

Australia's leading independent law firm, Corrs Chambers Westgarth, has become one of the first law firms in the country to commit to greater financial inclusion by developing a Financial Inclusion Action Plan.

Corrs has committed to expanding its pro bono offering through its Financial Inclusion Action Plan as part of a program run by Good Shepherd Microfinance.

Corrs is one of 30 organisations nationally that have committed to the program, and one of only two law firms to do so.

The focus for Corrs will be to expand its well-established pro bono program, collaborate with other organisations to increase financial resilience within the Australian community, and equip its own people with the support they need to avoid and manage financial hardship, according to Jeremy King, Partner and Chairman of Pro Bono & Community at Corrs Chambers Westgarth.

"Our commitment to the FIAP program is an example of where we have extended the firm's pioneering mindset beyond legal services and into our corporate responsibility strategy. Corrs already has a very active pro bono program in place which includes assisting people affected by financial hardship, but the FIAP program elevates this to a strategic level. It includes providing a better focus on financial inclusion both within the firm and externally, and allowing for collaboration with clients and other organisations to ensure the millions of Australians affected by financial exclusion can be better protected and add to the productivity of the nation," Mr King said.
