Australia: Norton Rose Australia Welcomes Four New Lateral Partners
International legal practice Norton Rose Australia has announced the appointment
Last Updated: 15 March 2010
  • Robert Milbourne, Energy & Resources – Brisbane
  • Petar Kuessner, Banking & Finance – Sydney
  • Gerard Breen, Insolvency & Restructuring – Sydney
  • Derek La Ferla, Corporate Finance – Perth

Don Boyd, Managing Partner of Norton Rose Australia and Group Deputy Chief Executive of Norton Rose Group, said the appointments reflected the Australian firm’s intention to align its strengths with those of the worldwide practice.

“Globally, we are strong in financial institutions, energy, infrastructure & commodities, technology and transport. Expect to see a lot more happening in this space soon,” Mr Boyd said.

According to Mr Boyd, these appointments, and that of Barry Sherriff from Freehills in November last year, reflect a growing attraction to Norton Rose, now the largest international legal practice in Australia, from lawyers at all levels and a cross-section of disciplines. “The dynamics of the legal profession are changing as we speak” said Boyd.

Robert Milbourne

Robert is currently General Counsel and Company Secretary at Vale Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Brazilian-based multi-national Vale, the second largest mining company in the world.

He specialises in project finance, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, energy and natural resources, as well as general corporate transactions.

“Robert brings very significant experience in cross-border transactions in the mining and resources sector. He will add further depth to our already strong global practice in this area,” Mr Boyd said.

Petar Kuessner

Petar joins from Mallesons Stephen Jaques, where he was in the banking and finance team, having previously spent four years at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, London.

He specialises in securitisation, derivatives, structured products and debt capital markets, and also has experience in aircraft finance, acquisition finance, project finance and general corporate finance transactions.

"Petar is one of the few senior lawyers in Sydney who possess a balance of securitisation and derivatives experience. He will provide additional depth to our banking team and give us a point of differentiation in the strategically important area of carbon trading," said Mr Boyd.

Gerard Breen

Gerard was previously a partner with Dibbs Barker Gosling. He is an experienced insolvency & restructuring lawyer and has acted in some celebrated pieces of litigation in the area.

“Gerard will add depth and breadth to our restructuring and insolvency team in Sydney. He has a proven track record with high profile matters and mutual clients and is an excellent addition to the practice,” Mr Boyd said.

Derek La Ferla

Derek rejoins the firm after retiring in 2007. He is a highly experienced corporate lawyer with excellent business relationships in Western Australia.

“WA has a significant strategic value to Norton Rose Group that extends beyond its booming resources industry. Perth itself has strong links with key markets in South East Asia and particularly Singapore, where Norton Rose is the largest international law firm,” Mr Boyd said.

Norton Rose Australia and its affiliates are members of Norton Rose Group, a leading international legal practice offering a full business law service from offices across Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.
