Last Updated: June 20 2017

Mountain View, CA and New York, NY (June 8, 2017) – Fenwick & West, a leading technology and life sciences law firm, announced today that it has broadened its privacy and cybersecurity practice with the addition of industry leader James "Jim" Koenig. Koenig will build an integrated team of lawyers, cross-discipline professionals and former industry privacy and cybersecurity officers to extend the range of services traditionally offered by law firms.

Koenig joins Fenwick as a partner in its New York office and will co-chair the firm's privacy and cybersecurity practice with Tyler Newby. The addition of Koenig and his cross-discipline data protection team expands Fenwick's privacy and cybersecurity practice and enables Fenwick to differentiate itself in the market by offering a full, unique suite of integrated services.

"Privacy, cybersecurity and the use and management of data are mission critical elements of doing business," said Fenwick chair Richard Dickson. "Jim is a tremendous addition to the practice and allows us to provide a cross-disciplinary, integrated approach to privacy and data management that combines business understanding, legal and regulatory advice with implementation design and support, something few other firms can do."

"Revolutionary technologies central to many of Fenwick's clients, like artificial intelligence, machine learning, virtual reality, internet of things, autonomous vehicles, blockchain security and genetics, present new and fundamental questions and issues around privacy and cybersecurity," said Koenig. "I'm thrilled to combine my practice with Fenwick's existing privacy and cyber services, creating a full-service, one-stop shop from inspiration to execution for privacy and cybersecurity. Over the next five years, we'll see significant shifts in the privacy and cybersecurity landscape on a global scale, as new technologies and business models create innovative, unprecedented uses for data. Fenwick is primed to be at the center of that shift."

Koenig has worked globally with an array of domestic and international clients on projects involving more than 125 countries. Over the last 10 years, he has represented clients in technology, life sciences, financial services, and many other industries—including 35% of Fortune 100 companies.

Koenig co-founded the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), was recognized on the National Law Journal's inaugural list of Cybersecurity Trailblazers and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional. Koenig has a B.S. in finance from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law.
