Australia: Five minutes with Nick Ward
Last Updated: 14 June 2017

Nick Ward, Graduate in our commercial team, has worked with Cooper Grace Ward for 10 years. We asked him to tell us in his own words what life at Cooper Grace Ward is like, and a few of his past experiences and favourite things.

  1. What made you decide to become a lawyer?

Both of my parents are lawyers so I have learnt a lot from both of them and have seen how successful they've been in their careers.

  1. How long have you worked at Cooper Grace Ward and what brought you to that position?

I landed my first role at Cooper Grace Ward 10 years ago as a 14 year old emptying Shred-X bins in my school holidays. As I progressed through high school I managed to upgrade to photocopying, scanning and matter closures. After a small sabbatical I returned to the firm as a law clerk in 2015 and started as a graduate in commercial in February this year. I've truly worked my way up the ranks!

  1. If you could invite three people for dinner, dead or alive, who would they be and why?

Darren Lockyer, Johnathan Thurston and Kerrod Walters – have a guess what the conversation would be about...

  1. Where's the best place to go for a drink or dinner after work?

Sixes and Sevens on James Street on a Friday night.

  1. What's the best advice you've ever been given?

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

  1. Do you have any hobbies/interests outside of work?

Going to the coast on the weekends and playing golf.

  1. Complete this sentence: If I wasn't a lawyer, I would be...

A real estate agent

  1. What do you think will be single biggest issue facing the legal space in Australia in 2017?

Offering a differentiated service to clients to set you apart from competitors, and the increasing threat of NewLaw.

  1. What do you love about your job?

The freedom to ask the people around me questions whenever I need help... I work with a great team of very knowledgeable lawyers in their fields.

  1. Something you might not know about me is that...

I was the smallest person in my grade in high school, which is ironic as I'm now 6 foot 2.
