UK: Clyde & Co Reveals The Investment Opportunities And Risks Of 10 Key African Economies In New Africa
Last Updated: 31 May 2017

Global law firm Clyde & Co today releases its second annual Africa Investment Guide. It provides investors with a high-level overview of the key legal issues in major African economies and addresses the crucial challenges, opportunities and risks of investing in the continent.

The 2017 edition of the guide provides an up-to-date review of Angola, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania.

As investors and corporates look beyond developed markets for growth and returns, many see the African continent as the next investment frontier.  The continent benefits from a young population, improving governance, rapid urbanisation cities, vast natural resources and a growing and increasingly tech-savvy middle class. Africa, therefore, presents significant opportunities for long-term growth and returns.

Despite these opportunities, the prospect of navigating often opaque and challenging legal landscapes can deter much needed foreign investment. These include overcoming new tax and regulatory regimes, difficulties in expropriating profits, uncertainty about employment and local content legislation and lack of clarity in real estate laws. All of these challenges create significant business risks to foreign investors.

The guide helps investors navigate these challenges by analysing each country's investment outlook, corporate structures available, immigration and employment considerations, the workings of the financial and banking system, tax implications and the dispute resolution landscape.

Dawda Jawara, Legal Director at Clyde & Co, comments: "We are delighted to present the second annual guide covering some of the world's most exciting growth markets. As several economies recover from a difficult 2016 and others continue to prosper, we hope the Africa Investment Guide will be a useful tool to help potential investors access the latest information on navigating these markets."
