UK: A Few Assets And Too Many Liabilities - Deloitte Takes Part In Edinburgh Marathon Festival
Last Updated: 15 May 2017

On Saturday 27 May 2017, in what is believed to be the biggest ever Deloitte Scotland mass participation sporting or charitable event, over 60 employees from Deloitte's Edinburgh office will be running the Edinburgh Marathon Festival 10k.

Starting and finishing near Dynamic Earth, the 10k takes place in and around Holyrood Park and Duddingston. The route offers stunning views of Edinburgh Castle and panoramic views of the city though the views do come at a price.....a rather gruelling climb up towards Arthur's Seat in the early stages of the run.

The team, which includes over 50 qualified and trainee Charted Accountants, is affectionately known as "a few assets and too many liabilities" and is running in support of the Firm's chosen Scottish charity Children 1st. Previously known as the Royal Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Children 1st is a Scottish charity which aims to give every child in Scotland a safe and secure childhood. The Deloitte team has targeted raising an ambitious total of £10,000 for the charity.

Children 1st has been selected as the local charity of choice as part of Deloitte's UK One Million Futures social impact initiative. One Million Futures has an overall goal of supporting one million people to overcome barriers to education and employment between 2016 and 2019.

The mass run was the brainchild of audit partner Jim Boyle who had persuaded a small team from the audit department to participate in the same event back in 2016. Jim thought he would combine his own Stirling marathon training with encouraging even more of his colleagues to catch the running bug this year.

Jim explained how the team started to come together: "It all started with an all staff email in the first week of January 2017. I thought that we could maybe get a team of 20 to 25 together. I have been completely blown away by the response. It was no coincidence that it was one of the first emails I sent in 2017 so I may have caught people who wanted to set a new year's resolution at just the right time. To have over 60 runners, very few of whom have run seriously before, is just incredible. I am immensely proud of them all. They're doing something very special."

The team has found the whole experience hugely rewarding and enjoyable. Jim added "It's been one of the best teams I have had the privilege to be part of and such a positive uplifting experience. There's been a real buzz around the office over the last few weeks as our training and fundraising has gathered momentum and it's the main topic of conversation around the kitchen areas. There aren't many better activities out there that can keep you fit, help build a sense of team community in the office and raise a huge amount of funds for charity at the same time."

Ashley Sharp, Senior Corporate Fundraiser for Children 1st, commented:

"On behalf of our children and families, we are grateful for this support from the Deloitte Edinburgh staff. Children 1st supports around 10,000 children and families across Scotland each year, and every £30 raised can help provide one week of support to a family. All funds raised will help us protect more children from abuse and neglect."
