UK: Clyde & Co Expands African Energy And Disputes Capabilities
Last Updated: 9 May 2017

Global law firm Clyde & Co has appointed two leading US-qualified arbitration and energy lawyers as partners to its leading Global Arbitration and Energy groups.

David Hesse and Peter F. Stewart join from Curtis Mallet-Prevost where they have built up practices with a regional focus on Africa.

David Hesse advises African countries and oil, gas and energy companies on disputes, dispute resolution, upstream activities, international tenders, refinery projects, farm-out agreements and other contracts in the petroleum and petrochemical industries. His international arbitration practice includes numerous matters involving states and state entities predominantly operating under ICSID, UNCITRAL and ICC rules.

Peter Stewart represents national oil companies, governments and state entities in upstream oil and gas development, commercial transactions and international arbitration. He also advises on oil and gas policy and regulation. His recent engagements have included negotiations of exploration, development and production agreements, joint operating agreements and agreements related to gas infrastructure and development. His practice also spans more general corporate matters including joint ventures, private equity and technology.

David has practiced in New York, Paris and London. Peter practiced in New York, Dubai, Silicon Valley and London. Both will be based out of London as part of Clyde & Co's Global Arbitration Group.

Ben Knowles, Co-Chair of Clyde & Co's Global Arbitration Group, says: "Clyde & Co has one of the largest international arbitration groups of any firm and having David and Peter on board further bolsters the practice, especially in relation to Africa, which is an increasingly important market. It further strengthens our firm-wide focus on oil & gas while boosting our sector-agnostic global arbitration group more broadly."

David Hesse says: "As the needs of our clients in Africa are becoming ever more complex I'm excited to be joining an international firm with dispute resolution at its heart and one with a clear focus on Africa, both on the ground and from global centres like London."

Peter F. Stewart says: "I'm looking forward to building a practice using the firm's market-leading global platform and working in a team of likeminded lawyers. Africa has growing oil and gas and energy markets and Clyde & Co's commitment to the Continent is very strong."

Clyde & Co's Global Arbitration group has more than 200 lawyers. The group includes over 70 partners from across our global platform with experience of all major arbitration rules and centres and detailed knowledge of the key specialised sector rules.

Both Hesse and Stewart are recognised in Chambers and Legal 500 for their work in Africa.
