Jersey: Ogier-Sponsored Guernsey Squash Team Reclaim Inter-Insular Title
Last Updated: 28 March 2017

The Ogier-sponsored Guernsey Squash team reclaimed the squash inter-insular title from Jersey at a recent championship event.

Guernsey were also 3-2 winners in racketball although Jersey's ladies won 4-1 on the day.

Ogier has been supporting the Guernsey Squash and Racketball Association for the past 13 years.

Ogier partner Simon Davies is a driving force behind the sponsorship. His passion stems from his admiration of the strength, speed, and strategy of the game.

He said: "Ogier is proud to support the Guernsey Squash and Racketball Association. Their teams, and ours, are court champions. We congratulate them on a well-deserved win, and look forward to supporting the Inter-island Juniors in their championships this Sunday at Beau Sejour."

The team has had mixed fortunes over the years, but is currently enjoying a renaissance.

Martin Watts, Guernsey Squash and Racketball's Development Officer, said: "Juniors are breaking into the adult teams and invigorating the squads. There is growth, with great new talent coming through, and the teams are noted for their strength and depth. Team A has been particularly strong. Its five members last won the inter-insular two years ago, and before that 12 years ago."

The Guernsey Squash and Racquetball Association is one of the Island's great sporting achievements. Its five courts at Beau Sejour are fully booked and it is working with the Badminton Association to develop new facilities to accommodate the increasing demand from players.

The team benefits from the expertise of Chris Simpson, a professional squash player who represented England as a junior. However Chris was absent from the recent championship due to injury and instead the star players were Henry Birch and Janick Radford whose matches, which both went to five games, proved the difference as the home team won 11-9 overall.

Guensey and Jersey are set to compete in division three of the European Team Championships next month, which is being hosted in Jersey for the first time.
