Sparke Helmore Lawyers held its annual International Women's Day event in Sydney on Tuesday 7 March. The event, which has previously hosted guest speakers including David Morrison AO and Annabel Crabb, featured a presentation from Australian Olympic team Chef de Mission, Kitty Chiller.

More than 140 clients and Sparke Helmore staff attended the evening. Kitty captivated the audience as she told the story of her involvement in the Olympics, from athlete to leader, and the challenges she faced as the first female Chef de Mission. "My approach is just head-down, focus on what is required, give it your all, give it your unwavering attention to detail and leave absolutely no stone unturned," she said in summing up the key to her success and overcoming the challenges she faced.

After Kitty's rousing speech, Sparke Helmore National Managing Partner, Phillip Salem, concluded the event by reaffirming the firm's commitment to increasing female partner numbers from 30% to parity and to promoting further inclusivity and diversity.

"It's widely known that the legal industry suffers from a gender imbalance, but I'm proud of the positive steps our firm is taking to change this," says Sparke Helmore Partner and Patron of the firm's Six Degrees diversity initiative, Kristina Miller. "In 2016, the firm became a signatory of the Law Society of New South Wales' Charter for the Advancement of Women in the Legal Profession. We have also continued to support diversity through a number of International Women's Day events across our offices this week and Six Degrees events throughout the year, that provide opportunities for female leaders to share their experiences and motivate, encourage and support women at the firm, in our client network and beyond."
