United States: Members Of Congress And Health Leaders Discuss Healthcare Transformation At Holland & Knight Symposium
Last Updated: February 22 2017

On Feb. 8, 2017, a group of healthcare industry leaders came together to discuss the future of the healthcare system. Unlike most healthcare conferences, this one wasn't focused on pressing business concerns. Instead, the symposium—led by the Holland & Knight Public Policy & Regulation Group—brought together experts in the industry and members of Congress to look at and discuss big-picture changes in the U.S. healthcare system.

In 2010, Congress enacted the most compressive reform to the U.S. healthcare system in decades. Now, seven years later, we are again undertaking a major debate about transforming our healthcare system. Accordingly, the symposium provided attendees the opportunity to learn from and share their perspectives with industry and congressional leaders who will help shape the direction of the nation's healthcare agenda.

Attendees heard from more than 15 leaders in their respective health fields and from the Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, the Honorable Rep. Michael Burgess, M.D. (R-TX); the Honorable Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL); the Honorable Marsha Blackburn (R-TN); the Honorable Diana DeGette (D-CO); the Honorable Richard Hudson (R-NC); and the Honorable Raul Ruiz, M.D. (D-CA). Holland & Knight applauds the leadership and willingness of our panelists and members of Congress to share their insights and perspective. The event would not have been a success without their contributions.

Discussions included the future of risk-based payment,  physician integration, reforms to the insurance market and delivery systems, Affordable Care Act (ACA) reform, The Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) reauthorization, medical research, cybersecurity, pandemic threats and other key topics.

The vision presented at "The Next Era of American Healthcare System Transformation Symposium" for the future of the healthcare industry is an ambitious one, with many unknowns, and many barriers and opportunities, but it's a vision worth pursuing.
