New Zealand: Chapman Tripp competition law stalwart in New Zealand
Last Updated: 3 February 2017

Chapman Tripp has been named a "stalwart" of competition law in New Zealand, with the most number of lawyers in any New Zealand firm ranked 'elite' by leading international directory Global Competition Review (GCR).

The firm's overall competition practice, led by partners Neil Anderson and Matt Sumpter together with consultant Grant David, is ranked "elite" in the 17th edition of the GCR100 survey, released this month.

"Chapman Tripp remains a stalwart of the country's competition bar and one of the strongest groups in the country," GCR commentary says.

"The firm has a significant merger practice, and Anderson and his team have guided multiple deals through in-depth reviews in recent months."

Recent deals the team advised on include acting for Z Energy on its successful application to the Commerce Commission to acquire 100% of the shares in Chevron New Zealand for $785m, New Zealand's most significant merger clearance application in 2015.

"It was the longest case ever to go through a Commerce Commission in-depth investigation and be approved," GCR commentary says.

"In behavioural matters, Chapman Tripp has been involved in all of the Commerce Commission's major investigations," GCR also notes.

The firm has also advised Expedia Inc on its successful application for Commerce Commission clearance for its AU$703m acquisition of Australian travel agency Wotif, Vector in successfully obtaining clearance from Commerce Commission to acquire 100% of the shares of Arc Innovations, Meridian Energy's smart metering business and complainant Godfrey Hirst in the contested Cavalier/New Zealand wool deal.

"It has been an eventful year in New Zealand's competition law landscape, and Chapman Tripp has been involved in the major matters – so it is pleasing to be recognised for this, and a testament to the strength and depth of our competition and antitrust practice," Anderson says.

Anderson has also topped Chambers Asia-Pacific 2017 league tables, ranked band-1 for competition and antitrust.

These rankings follow the firm's recent successes, including being the only New Zealand law firm to place in Mergermarket's top 15 rankings for M&A deal value and count in Australasia in 2016, winning Large Law Firm of the Year at the 2016 New Zealand Law Awards, NZ Deal Team of the Year at the 2016 Australasian Law Awards and National Law Firm of the Year for New Zealand in the 2016 IFLR Asia Awards.
