Canada: BLG Grows Its Labour And Employment Law Group In Montréal
Last Updated: January 30 2017

Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is delighted to announce that Sophia M. Rossi and Maude Galarneau have recently joined the firm's Labour and Employment Law Group in the Montréal office.

Through her previous employment with a trade union organization, Sophia M. Rossi acquired experience in different facets of labour and employment law and has developed a particular expertise in collective labour relations. On several occasions, Sophia has been called up to represent clients before grievance arbitrators, as well as before administrative tribunals and the courts. She has acted as spokesperson in the negotiation of collective labour agreements. Sophia has also conducted many training sessions, dealing with legal issues pertaining to labour relations and she has taught labour law at the Université de Montréal. The expertise that Sophia has gained will, in particular, enable clients of our firm to become even more familiar with the internal operations of trade unions in Québec.

In carrying out her previous duties in the legal department of the Commission des normes, de l'équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (the "CNESST"), Maude Galarneau specialized in employer-employee relationships of individual workers, including labour standards. Maude has represented many clients before the Administrative Labour Tribunal, as well as the civil courts, in matters connected with the Act respecting labour standards, its application and the different remedies that it affords. In that regard, she has been called upon to assess the risks involved in such disputes and to advise her clients as to the options open to them in such litigation. Maude's arrival will enable the firm's clients to benefit from a unique perspective on the handling of employers' cases by the CNESST.

As André Royer, the National Practice Group Leader, has observed, "The arrival of Sophia and Maude in our Practice Group shows once again the depth and breadth of the expertise that BLG is capable of providing to its clients in labour and employment law." These changes are part and parcel of the practical and innovative approach that the firm is striving to offer its clients.
