Bermuda: Appleby Builds Global Offshore Structured Finance Capability With Hire Of Leading Finance Partner
Last Updated: 23 January 2008

Leading offshore law firm Appleby has announced the appointment of Jeanne Bartlett as a partner in the structured finance group where she will develop and lead the firm’s global structured finance capability. Although Jeanne will eventually be based in the Cayman Office, the group’s focus will be truly global, covering each of the Appleby offices and across all geographical regions, including emerging markets.

Jeanne Bartlett’s background is both as a lawyer and investment banker and she has been involved in the structured finance, securitization and debt capital markets since the market began in the mid 1980s when she worked at Slaughter and May. She subsequently moved to Linklaters in Asia before becoming an investment banker where she originated and structured financings in the UK, Europe and Russia. After seven years in banking, Jeanne returned to private practice as a partner at the US law firm and structured finance market leader, Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe. In 2001 she joined DLA Piper where she headed up their debt capital markets and securitization practice until she retired from private practice in 2006 to write her third novel. She is a regular contributor to specialist capital markets and securitization publications and speaks at numerous international conferences about the transactions in which she has been involved.

Commenting on her appointment Jeanne Bartlett said: "I am delighted to be joining a firm with Appleby’s reputation and the opportunity to take on the challenge of a global role persuaded me to relinquish my author’s pen and return to the law. The role ideally suits my background and experience both as a structured finance lawyer and investment banker as we will be targeting both developed markets and the emerging markets. Whilst there is no doubt that the current issues in the debt markets heralds changes for structured finance in the future, this brings opportunity and many sectors of the market, not connected to subprime mortgages, remain active. We believe there is a significant opportunity in the offshore market for a firm with Appleby’s international credibility."

Peter Bubenzer, Appleby’s Global Group Managing Partner added: "We are delighted Jeanne has chosen to join us to develop and build this key practice area for the future. She is without doubt one of the leading structured finance lawyers and is ideally placed to lead the growth of our structured finance practice. Our strategy is to develop our offshore services in the key emerging economies and our global office network is in place to support this goal."
