Managing the many demands of a diverse workforce is a complicated and, at times, confronting challenge. Councils, being a public sector body, are reasonably expected to adopt an approach which is consistent with high community standards, and frequently face more and more complex challenges than most.

In whatever form that challenge presents itself – be it fairly and reasonably managing employees who are impacted in some way by the employment relationship or ensuring that its workforce is treated fairly when a challenge appears from the hands of third parties (allegations of inappropriate conduct from media, ratepayers, or council contractors) – Council will require a "steady hand on the tiller" with knowledge of options and risks.

Our Workplace and Industrial Relations partner, Mark Curran, is an employment and industrial relations lawyer with over 20 years experience and is able to confidently lead you through the maze that is employee relations. Mark has extensive experience in acting with local councils, recently providing advice on defending claims for employee entitlements by contractors and on the management of ill and injured employees

Whether your challenges are implementing enterprise agreements, effecting change in the organisation, creating or interpreting employment contracts, using alternative sources of labour (labour hire, casual, contracting), applying industrial instruments, assisting with performance management or responding to the needs of a diverse workforce (such as flexible work arrangements, or discrimination), Mark's experience can assist.

His calm, practical and pragmatic approach is available as a sounding board for your HR directorate or to provide the lead on any employment issues.

Mark's long practical history is supplemented by his Masters in Law focused on employment law, industrial relations, discrimination law and safety law. His regular employment law seminars are valued by his clients. He has also recently authored "Australian Commercial Precedents: Employment Precedents" published by Thomson Reuters.
