Last Updated: October 12 2007

October 10, 2007Mayer Brown, a leading international law firm, today announced that Dan Himmelfarb will soon join its leading Supreme Court and Appellate Practice as a partner.  Mr. Himmelfarb, 42, comes to Mayer Brown from the United States Department of Justice where he worked both as Assistant to the Solicitor General since 2002 and as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1997 to 2002.

During his time at the Solicitor General's Office he argued ten cases before the Supreme Court and filed more than 100 briefs in the High Court, at both the petition and merits stages, on a number of issues including criminal law, the First Amendment, the Eleventh Amendment, RICO, administrative law, contract law, environmental law, immigration law, and securities fraud.  In 2005, Mr. Himmelfarb received the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award.

“Dan is a tremendous lawyer who possesses an unusual combination of experience both as a prosecutor and as an appellate lawyer,” commented Kenneth S. Geller, Vice Chairman of Mayer Brown and one of the founding partners of the Supreme Court and Appellate Practice.  “He will be instrumental in helping further expand our top-ranked Appellate group and assist in recruiting and grooming our next generation of premier appellate attorneys.”

Added Peter Scher, Partner-In-Charge of the Washington, DC office, “Dan’s decision to join Mayer Brown is a major coup for our firm.  In addition to his credentials as a leading appellate lawyer, Dan’s expertise in criminal investigations and litigation while at the Department of Justice will be a significant asset to our Securities Enforcement & Investigations and White Collar Defense practice groups, further enhancing our ability to provide our clients with superior and comprehensive counsel in each of these areas.”

Prior to working in the Solicitor General’s office, Mr. Himmelfarb spent five years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the criminal division for the Southern District of New York where he tried eight cases, seven to juries, and argued ten cases before the Second Circuit.  One of the most significant cases he handled was the  prosecution of a spiritual advisor to Osama Bin Ladin for the attempted murder of a corrections officer and attempted escape from jail.

Mr. Himmelfarb’s legal career began in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit where he clerked for Judge J. Michael Luttig from 1991 to 1992.  He went on to clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas from 1992 to 1993.  Mr. Himmelfarb transitioned to private practice in 1994, joining Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz as an associate in the litigation department.

“For many years Mayer Brown has had the preeminent Supreme Court and Appellate practice in the country, and it is both an honor and a professional challenge to join such a distinguished group,” said Mr. Himmelfarb.  He continued, “Mayer Brown’s Securities and White Collar practices are also distinctively strong, and I look forward to making a contribution there as well.”

Mr. Himmelfarb graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University in 1987.  He received his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1991. He has written for The Washington Times, Commentary magazine, and other publications.
