Last Updated: October 12 2007

October 10, 2007 – Mayer Brown, a leading international law firm, announced today that Robert D. Gilbert has joined the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice in New York.  Mr. Gilbert, 52, is a seasoned trial lawyer who has tried more than 20 cases to jury verdicts. His intellectual property litigation practice focuses on trademark and patent infringement matters as well as copyright and trade secret litigation and software licensing disputes.

Mr. Gilbert has won numerous court victories, including injunctions in seven states on behalf of manufacturers, retailers, and a prominent national association.  One such trademark victory opened a national market for a retail chain.  In addition, on behalf of several computer software companies, he vigorously contested lawsuits and arbitrations concerning copyright infringement and licensing issues.

Mr. Gilbert will join a team of intellectual property lawyers who have litigated cases in a variety of patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret, trade dress, false advertising, and unfair competition disputes all over the country, as well as internationally.

Commented Kenneth S. Geller, Mayer Brown Vice Chairman, “We are delighted to welcome Bob Gilbert to the firm.  We are strongly committed to growing our New York office in a smart way that addresses clients’ current and anticipated needs.  As IP becomes increasingly critical to the corporate strategy, our objective is to ensure that our global clients can turn to Mayer Brown for their IP counseling, transactional and litigation needs.  Bob is the perfect addition, in that he brings significant trial expertise and seasoned counseling advice to our globally-ranked IP platform.”

Added Brian Trust, Partner-In-Charge of Mayer Brown’s New York office, “With his proven courtroom experience and significant IP counseling and litigation capabilities, Bob further strengthens our IP client service offering in New York.  Tied to his professional instincts and substantial corporate experience, Bob is an extremely valuable addition to our global Intellectual Property practice.”

In addition to his IP experience, Mr. Gilbert’s commercial litigation experience has included cases involving complex contractual disputes, corporate dissolution, and product liability litigation.  He is also an active and innovative practitioner of alternative dispute resolution options.

Mr. Gilbert comes to Mayer Brown from Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP, where he was part of the Intellectual Property and Business Trial practice groups. Previously, Mr. Gilbert was with Pillsbury Winthrop as well as Brown Raysman and had been counsel with General Electric at its corporate headquarters.  Throughout the years, Mr. Gilbert has represented such prominent clients as Samsung, Hyundai, and GE on intellectual property and complex commercial litigation disputes.  He commented, “Mayer Brown’s preeminent capabilities in complex commercial litigation, international arbitration, and intellectual property litigation will undoubtedly be of enormous benefit to the clients that I have served.”

Mr. Gilbert received his J.D. from Yale Law School and his A.B. from Princeton. He is a member of the state and federal bars of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and the District of Columbia. In addition, Mr. Gilbert is a member of the Litigation Sections of the New York Bar Association, Connecticut Bar Association and American Bar Association, and has served on the National Executive Committee of the Yale Law School Association.
