Bermuda: Appleby Achieves Tier 1 And 2 Across Nine Of Its Offshore Locations
Last Updated: 2 November 2016

Appleby's offices in Mauritius, Seychelles, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Isle of Man and Jersey have all achieved Tier 1 and 2 in the latest IFLR1000 rankings published on 14 October.

The IFLR1000 is the guide to the world's leading financial law firms. The rankings year-on-year are compiled by a team of dedicated specialist legal journalists and is the only publication of its kind to focus on the leading law firms for corporate finance worldwide.

One client described Appleby as honing "very good technical skills and market knowledge", as well as giving "fast response time and practical commercial advice". Another client told IFLR100 that the firm is "responsive, commercially minded and helpful in achieving clients' objectives".

In addition, Appleby was commended by the prestigious guide which said: "The team at Appleby is one of the island's industry leaders, and stands out especially for its roles in corporate finance, energy, insurance and reinsurance and shipping transactions."

Several of Appleby's lawyers in each of its jurisdictions were recognised across different practice areas including Energy and Infrastructure, Financial & Corporate, and Investment Funds.

The following was said by the 2016 IFLR100 guide:

"Appleby is one of the first firms that comes to mind when thinking of Bermuda, and rightly so."

"The team at Appleby is one of the island's industry leaders, and stands out especially for its roles in corporate finance, energy, insurance and reinsurance and shipping transactions."

"Appleby's quality is made strikingly clear by the surprising size of many of the deals it handles. The firm represented clients in a number of significant M&A transactions, and true to the firm's reputation, quite a few of these deals involved insurers."

"According to clients the firm has especially deep expertise in the insurance sector, investment funds, shipping and aviation and over the past year the office was busy on private equity linked M&A transactions, African energy and infrastructure projects and debt restructuring exercises (especially in shipping)."

Cayman Islands

"Appleby is widely seen as in the top three firms on the island for corporate finance with especially strong practice in fund financing and structured finance."

"Appleby benefits from having one of the widest networks of any offshore firm including full coverage across Guernsey and Jersey."

"Outstanding, excellent knowledge, very commercial, know which battles to pick, advise properly and in a way that helps us make decisions. Conduct themselves with an absence of drama."

Hong Kong

"Appleby has 26 years' experience in Asia."

"It is the only offshore firm covering eight of the key offshore jurisdictions in Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands (BVI), the Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Mauritius, and Seychelles."

"The firm has a strong equity capital markets practice and completed one-third of the HKSE offshore listings in the past year. It is also developing its restructuring practice, and added depth to its banking and finance practice with the hire of partner Fiona Chan from rival Harneys."

"Responsive, commercially minded and helpful in achieving clients' objectives."

"Focused, dynamic and solution driven".
