United States: Thelen Supports The Legal Community Against Violence
Last Updated: June 20 2007

Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner LLP is proud to be the front runner sponsor of the 2007 Legal Community Against Violence (LCAV) dinner and awards ceremony, which will be held in San Francisco on June 28, 2007.

The LCAV is the country's only public interest law center dedicated exclusively to providing legal assistance towards the prevention of gun violence.

Each year, the LCAV holds an anniversary dinner in honor of those whose lives were lost or devastated in a July 1, 1993, gun rampage at 101 California Street in San Francisco. A survivor of that tragic event was Thelen Construction and Government Contracts Chair John Heisse. Within days of the shooting, he, along with other Bay Area lawyers established the LCAV.

"To end the epidemic of gun violence in this country, we need gun laws and policies that work," says Mr. Heisse.

One of the LCAV’s first projects was to mobilize the legal community in support of the 1994 federal assault weapon ban. Since then, the group has made many milestones working at the state and local level. Over its 14 years in operation, the LCAV’s services have contributed to the adoption of hundreds of California firearms ordinances, many of which have inspired state legislation that now places California at the forefront of gun policy reform.

Thelen’s commitment to preventing gun violence remains strong. The firm recently devoted thousands of hours, pro bono, to the City of New York in its landmark lawsuit against the manufacturers of assault weapons.

The keynote speaker for the LCAV’s 2007 dinner will be the Reverend Jesse Jackson, one of America's foremost social and civil rights leaders. At the dinner, the LCAV will also confer its Distinguished Leadership Award to Lorrain Taylor, whose twin sons were shot and killed at the age of 22. In response to this tragedy, Ms. Taylor founded 24/7 Gospel, a nonprofit organization that provides comfort and services to victims and survivors of gun violence. The dinner will also honor the California Gun Violence Prevention Coalition, a network of organizations and policy experts working collaboratively statewide.

Please join in supporting the LCAV by attending the 14th Anniversary Dinner, which will take place at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel on Thursday, June 28. The event begins with a reception at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner and presentations at 7:00 p.m.
