Montréal, October 13 2016 — The Association des diplômés de l'Université de Montréal (ADUM), the University's alumni association, held its annual Ordre du mérite (Order of Merit) gala evening this Wednesday, October 12, at which The Honourable Louise Arbour C.C., G.O.Q. , counsel with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, was feted by her peers.

Since 1967, the Association has honoured exceptional graduates who embody effort, discipline, courage and success, in making a notable contribution to the advancement of their communities.

The event was held in Le Windsor building, chaired by the former Premier of Québec, Mr. Pierre Marc Johnson, in the presence of Madam Louise Roy and Mr. Guy Breton, respectively Chancellor and Rector of the UdeM.

A stirring tribute was paid to the laureate, who holds numerous honorary doctorates and titles of distinction. A tireless defender of human rights and civil liberties, Louise Arbour has acted at the highest levels of the world of law, both in Canada and abroad.

"You have been an example of personal, as well as professional, leadership, a source of inspiration for young people, especially young women, and for all those who seek to change the world. Through your actions, you have advanced the cause of peace and justice, for all, without distinction", said Association President, Jacques Girard (Law, 1963), during the evening.

"You have travelled that path, as a woman of your generation, which is my generation too, breaking down walls, doing away with taboos, and asserting for others a freedom that our mothers never enjoyed," said Louise Roy, adding "Through your extraordinary career, the influence of the Université de Montréal and our Law Faculty has radiated."

"You are the proof that when one once becomes a Université de Montréal graduate, it's for life", declared Guy Breton, addressing Madam Arbour.

Crowned as she has been by many distinctions throughout her career, The Honourable Louise Arbour, on receiving the medal of the Ordre du mérite, observed: "I am particularly touched by this mark of recognition by my peers and am immensely proud of belonging to the community of Université de Montréal graduates."

The ADUM is delighted to be able once more to honour a graduate of its university whose remarkable career has redounded far and wide to the credit of the institution.
