Australia: DLA Phillips Fox Part Of Global Legal Solution For The Linde Group
Last Updated: 5 March 2007

DLA Phillips Fox will provide legal services to The Linde Group in Australia and New Zealand as part of a new legal services outsourcing model across Linde's global operations.

The Linde Group is the leading international gas and engineering company with global revenue of €12.7 billion. DLA Piper was one of only five law firms selected by Linde for its legal panel following their takeover of The BOC Group in September 2006. The combined Linde/BOC organisation previously used more than 150 legal providers. Following its exclusive alliance with DLA Piper in November last year, DLA Phillips Fox was an integral member of the global proposal team.

Nick Deeming, Chief Legal Officer at The Linde Group, led an extensive four-month review of the internal legal services team and its external legal providers.

'I initiated this review with an open mind as to what the end structure might look like, though I had one clear aim - to identify one or two leading law firms in each continent that would work in partnership with our internal legal services team and deliver high-quality services across all the areas we are likely to outsource,' said Mr Deeming.

Mr Deeming added, 'The more innovative part is around the appointment of just one firm, DLA Piper, to cover the day-to-day requirements. I met some outstanding law firms and those finally appointed stood out as having the best combination of skills to suit our needs, together with a commercial package of fees and value-added activity that would allow us to deliver essential savings to the organisation.'

Under The Linde Group's radical new model, DLA Phillips Fox will advise on matters in Australia and New Zealand; with DLA Piper servicing Linde's legal requirements across Europe, Asia and the US. The global arrangement amounts to 80 per cent of Linde's total legal spend. In Australia and New Zealand, the single solution approach covers a range of corporate and commercial areas, M&A, litigation, employment, property, regulatory and product liability.

'As part of DLA Piper Group, we are delighted to be working with The Linde Group in Australia and New Zealand,' said Tony Crawford, Chief Executive, DLA Phillips Fox.

'We entered into our alliance with DLA Piper so we could fully participate in the global legal services market and offer our clients a true global solution to their legal needs. Local and regional businesses increasingly require legal support in other parts of the world. Similarly, multinationals with operations in this region want rapid access to the same level of skill and service they experience elsewhere. Linde's decision demonstrates how highly clients value such a coordinated global approach to the delivery of legal services.'

'It is very rewarding to work with clients such as The Linde Group who are embracing the DLA Piper difference. As a member of DLA Piper Group we are actively reshaping how legal services are delivered, both globally and in this region,' added Mr Crawford.

As part of the global service arrangement DLA Phillips Fox will provide secondees to The Linde Group and participate in the DLA Piper global legal intranet/extranet which will be integrated into Linde's existing knowledge systems.
