Sydney, 30 August 2016: Clayton Utz Environment and Planning partner Claire Smith and Workplace Relations, Employment and Safety partner Shae McCartney have jointly won a place on the prestigious 2016 Legal Innovation Index by LexisNexis® and Janders Dean in recognition of the innovative CU SAFE (Serious Accident, Fatality and Environmental) Incident Response app.

CU SAFE guides users through the critical first 48 hours after a serious accident or incident. A first of its kind, the web-based app provides a step-by-step guide to help contain the situation, minimise risk to people, property or the environment, and to notify the relevant authorities in the local area. It also has an offline capability making it accessible in areas without internet or mobile phone reception.

Claire and Shae said they were delighted with their joint listing in the 'Individual' category of the Index, which recognises innovative thinking and design by individuals and organisations across the Australian legal industry.

"CU SAFE was a concerted response to our clients' need for a compliance solution in the event of a serious accident or incident," said Shae. "Already, the app has been downloaded over 3,000 times in Australia and across the world, demonstrating its relevance and the demand for such a tool in the marketplace."

Claire credited the success of CU SAFE to its simple yet practical and comprehensive guide which could be used by anyone, regardless of their level of safety and environment knowledge.

"The beauty of CU SAFE is its prescriptive interface which takes the panic and guesswork out of the equation in dangerous and high-pressure situations. This means that irrespective of their level of experience, users can be confident they are taking the appropriate actions to address and contain the situation while meeting the relevant regulatory requirements," said Claire.
