Australia: Phillips Fox Announces Merger With Gadens Lawyers In Perth
Last Updated: 6 September 2006

Leading commercial law firm Phillips Fox today announced a merger with the Perth partnership of Gadens Lawyers. The merger excludes Gadens' volume banking practice.

The merger comes four months after Phillips Fox opened its fully integrated office in Perth after operating a franchise in that city for almost seven years.

Tony Crawford, Chief Executive of Phillips Fox says that since the integration in April, the firm has aggressively sought to grow its presence in Perth to reflect the breadth of the firm at large. 'Our merger with Gadens' Perth partnership gives us a full complement of specialist services to meet the needs of corporate and government clients, both locally and nationally,' says Crawford.

The merger brings to Phillips Fox a solid reputation in areas where the firm is generally strong, as well as an impressive track record in the mining and energy sector which is important in the local market. 'We are delighted to have attracted a local firm of such depth and quality,' says Crawford.

Phillips Fox is increasingly attracting international clients following the firm's recent announcement of their exclusive alliance with DLA Piper, one of the largest legal services organisations in the world. 'The range of services offered by the merged team in Perth positions us well to service the growing demand from our international clients. The timing is perfect in this regard,' says Crawford.

'We took a considered approach. The culture of the firm is important to us and our clients, and we were interested only in firms who share our commitment to the firm's strategy and values,' adds Crawford.

Since his appointment as CEO of Gadens Lawyers Perth in April 2004, David Prentice has focused on building the firm's reputation in a number of key areas. 'It has always been our belief that being part of a national firm is strategically important for us. We are also impressed with the firm's vision. Phillips Fox knows where it is going and is making the decisions necessary to get there.'

The merger sees Gadens' Perth partnership move away from a federated structure to join the fully integrated trans-Tasman Phillips Fox partnership. It will create a practice of 12 partners, supported by 40 lawyers with an expected revenue of approximately A$16 million.
