British Virgin Islands: First Industry Seminar On BVI Legal Profession Act Hosted By Ogier
Last Updated: 18 July 2016

Dancia Penn QC, a former BVI Attorney General now heading the new regulatory body for the legal profession, has spoken at the first industry seminar on the Legal Profession Act, hosted by Ogier.

The Act, which established the BVI General Legal Council that now regulates and supervises the profession, came into force in November and has already been amended twice.

The keynote speaker at the seminar was Mrs Penn QC, a former Attorney General and Deputy Governor of the BVI, who is now the Chair of the BVI General Legal Council which has responsibility for the admission of lawyers, legal education and training, disciplinary matters, legal aid funding, ethics and pupilage.

Ogier's BVI Practice Partner, Ray Wearmouth, said "We were delighted to welcome Dancia Penn QC and senior members of the judiciary. Dancia gave us a first-hand update on the work of the General Legal Council since the LPA came into force. She discussed the GLC's plans and priorities, gave us an up-date on her recent visit to our colleagues practicing BVI law in Hong Kong and also explained some of the areas of the LPA which are likely to require some clarification for the profession in coming months."

BVI law has been widely practiced around the world for many years with large concentrations of practitioners in Hong Kong and the UK in particular, in addition to the BVI itself.

Ogier were delighted to host the first seminar on the LPA and join forces in co-sponsoring the event with MWM Business Network who regularly organise thought leadership events in the Territory. The event was attended by senior members of the BVI judiciary, including two commercial court judges and leading members of the profession.

Ray added "Ogier has an impressive footprint of BVI-admitted lawyers practicing BVI law in our offices around the world. BVI lawyers operating in those markets more generally are absolutely key to the success of the wider BVI financial services offering. As such, having a strong, collaborative global profession is a real advantage for the BVI."
