United States: Leading Energy Tax Attorney Martha Groves Pugh Joins Thelen Reid & Priest LLP
Last Updated: May 12 2006

Prominent energy tax specialist Martha Groves Pugh has joined the Tax Department of law firm Thelen Reid & Priest LLP as a partner in the Washington, DC office.

Ms. Pugh is widely recognized as one of the premier attorneys on nuclear decommissioning, and has appeared before the Internal Revenue Service, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and state public service commissions. Ms. Pugh also has extensive experience in advising energy companies on a wide range of tax-related issues. Ms. Pugh joins Thelen Reid from McDermott Will & Emery LLP, where she was a partner and a leader of the firm’s Energy Tax Group.

"Martha Pugh joins the partnership at a truly exciting time for the firm and for the energy industry," said Andrew Ness, Managing Partner of the firm’s Washington, DC office. "With Marty on the team, we are well positioned to continue to expand our tax services for the energy industry, where the firm has long held a leadership position and where we expect to see continued growth. We anticipate that through the sale of existing nuclear power plants, increasing maintenance and decommissioning issues, and the improving prospects for financing new construction, nuclear energy will be a strong source of growth in our energy and tax groups."

Prior to joining McDermott Will & Emery, Ms. Pugh was an associate at Thelen Reid & Priest.

"It is a genuine pleasure to return to Thelen Reid," said Ms. Pugh. "Thelen Reid is undeniably one of the nation’s leading energy and utility firms, and has a dynamic tax practice that serves the needs of the industry. I am very excited about working with my colleagues at the firm, both old and new, to help us maintain our leadership position and further the growth of the firm."

Ms. Pugh is the vice chair of the American Bar Association Taxation and Accounting Subcommittee of the Section of Public Utility Communications and Transportation Law, and is a member of the ABA Accounting Method Subcommittee of the Section of Taxation. She holds a J.D. from Golden Gate University School of Law. She is admitted to the bars of the District of Columbia and California. Ms. Pugh is also a certified public accountant.
