Canada: Borden Ladner Gervais Hires Leading Arbitrator Mort Mitchnick

Toronto, Ontario – September 21, 2005 – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to announce that Mort Mitchnick, one of Canada’s leading labour arbitrators/ mediators, has joined the National Labour and Employment Group as counsel to the National firm and as a partner in our Toronto office.

Best known as a distinguished arbitrator and mediator, Mr. Mitchnick has served as Chair of the Ontario Labour Relations Board, as Alternate Chair of the Public Service Labour Relations Tribunal, as a Referee under the Employment Standards Act, a Board of Inquiry under the Human Rights Code, and a special mediator and arbitrator under the Education Act. He has conducted countless interest arbitrations, particularly in the fire, federal civil service and healthcare sectors, including a number of rounds of Hospital Central bargaining. For many years he served on the standing panel of arbitrators for a wide variety of industries, including Major League Baseball, power generation, the steel and airline industries and the community college, university and municipal sectors. Mr. Mitchnick most recently served as permanent Facilitator to the Physician Services Committee of the Ministry of Health and Ontario Medical Association. He also has lengthy experience arbitrating and/or mediating Wrongful Dismissal actions.

A graduate of University of Toronto Law School (LLB 1970), Mr. Mitchnick was called to the Ontario Bar in 1972, and was engaged in legal practice for seven years exclusively in the area of labour relations. He became a Vice Chair of the Ontario Labour Relations Board in 1979, ultimately becoming Chair of the Board from 1989-1992.
