Canada: BLG One Of The First Canadian Firms To Sign Pledge For Equal Representation In Arbitration
Last Updated: May 26 2016

Toronto (May 19, 2016) – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to announce it has become the one of the first Canadian law firms to sign the Equal Representation in Arbitration Pledge. This international effort was created to improve the profile and representation of women in arbitration, and to appoint women as arbitrators on an equal opportunity basis.

"BLG is committed to increasing diversity in the international arbitration community, including among those acting as arbitrators," said Robert Deane, national leader of BLG's International Trade and Arbitration Group. "We felt it was essential for BLG to show its leadership and adopt the pledge, which will keep equality top-of-mind and help ensure the advancement of women in the international arbitration field."

The pledge provides concrete and actionable steps that BLG, and the arbitration community in general, can take to achieve the pledge's objectives, with the ultimate goal of reaching full parity. The pledge aspires to be a first step in the direction of achieving more equal representation of all under-represented groups in the arbitration community.

This initiative is one of many diversity and inclusion initiatives supported by BLG. The firm is also a founding signatory to the Statement of Principles of the Law Firm Diversity and Inclusion Network, and is an employer partner of the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion. We are also a member and active participant in Catalyst Canada, the leading non-profit research and advocacy organization dedicated to creating opportunities for women and business in Canada.
