Canada: Gowlings Program to Facilitate Sustainable Development in Canadian Cities
Last Updated: November 3 2005

Sustainable Urban Solutions designed to create livable communities by connecting municipalities and project partners

October 13, 2005 - Ottawa, ON – Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP (Gowlings) today launched Sustainable Urban Solutions, a national streamlined legal and advisory service geared at facilitating responsible urban growth and development. The program, first of its kind in Canada, connects municipalities, lenders and private project partners with funding opportunities associated with environmental improvement, infrastructure and sustainable development.

"The solution to creating livable communities will come through municipal projects that benefit from innovative financing, whether from the public or private sector," said Bob Onyschuk, Partner, Environmental, Real Estate and Urban Development National Practice Group. "The role of Gowlings' Sustainable Urban Solutions is to facilitate that process by creating workable alliances that close the funding gap between public and private sectors."

By combining the expertise of four key practice groups – Municipal; Environmental; Energy and Infrastructure; Government Regulations and Regulatory Affairs – the Sustainable Urban Solutions program helps municipalities create flexible urban infrastructures that preserve environmental resources while accommodating continuing fiscal, social and cultural changes.

"Municipalities need to turn the opportunities available for implementing environmentally smart infrastructure solutions into reality," added Harry Dahme, Partner, Environmental, Real Estate and Urban Development National Practice Group. " With our understanding of complex infrastructure and environmental issues, Gowlings can be a driving force in building smart communities for the future."

The Sustainable Urban Solutions program will offer advisory services on strategies for urban development, brownfield redevelopment, heritage preservation and redevelopment, tax increment financing, alternative finance procurement and options for infrastructure financing.
