Australia: Corrs hosts Australia Indonesia Economic Partnership Forum
Last Updated: 24 May 2016

Corrs facilitates discussion on closer economic partnership between Australia and Indonesia.

In March 2016, the Australian and Indonesian trade ministers reactivated bilateral negotiations on a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (IA-CEPA), which will build on existing multilateral and regional agreements.

The Australian and Indonesian governments have sought assistance from business to identify barriers to trade and opportunities in a new agreement. The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Australian Industry Group and the Australia Indonesia Business Council (AIBC), together with their Indonesian counterparts, have established a Business Partnership Group to conduct forums in both Australia and Indonesia and prepare a report to government.

Corrs was pleased to host the Melbourne forum which heard from a member of the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade's negotiation team.  The President of the AIBC, Debnath Guharoy, then facilitated a roundtable discussion on current challenges and the opportunities presented by the IA-CEPA.

Justin Fox, Corrs partner and Chair of the South East Asia Focus Group said, "We are pleased to have contributed to discussion about bringing Australia and Indonesia closer together.  There are great opportunities for our clients and we welcome the chance for business to assist government in taking the economic partnership forward".
