Program Content:

Numerous state and local tax (SALT) developments have occurred during the first half of 2016, including the adoption of landmark tax legislation in Delaware, Louisiana and South Dakota. State courts have addressed a wide variety of SALT disputes, including the availability of alternative apportionment, the existence (or nonexistence) of unitary groups, and the legality of sales tax notice and reporting requirements. State tax authorities and the Multistate Tax Commission have been busy promulgating regulations and other guidance interpreting recent corporate and sales tax enactments. Congress also continues to evaluate SALT issues, including the mobile workforce bill and remote seller legislation.

Members of Grant Thornton LLP's SALT practice will discuss these developments, with a view into how they may affect taxpayers' current and prospective tax filings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify significant SALT developments in state legislatures.
  • Differentiate recent activity on SALT matters in the U.S. Supreme Court, state courts and Congress.
  • Analyze how these developments will affect taxpayers' positions on filed tax returns, as well as positions to be taken on prospective tax returns.

Featured speakers:

  • Jamie Yesnowitz, principal, SALT – National Tax Office leader, Washington, D.C.
  • Caroline Balfour, senior manager, Income/Franchise Tax, Minneapolis, Minn.
  • Nisha Mathew, manager, Income/Franchise Tax, Seattle, Wash.
  • Chris Oatis, director, Income/Franchise Tax, Orlando, Fla.
