Nine lawyers from Swidler Berlin have been chosen by their peers as leaders in their respective areas of practice, according to the 2005 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. Swidler was ranked as a leading firm in five different practice areas.

Roger Frankel, the head of Swidler Berlin’s Bankruptcy Group, was ranked in the top tier of bankruptcy lawyers. He was referred to as "the dean of the bankruptcy practice". The practice is national in scope and has carved out a niche representing public utility companies in Chapter 11 proceedings. Rick Wyron, a Swidler bankruptcy partners, has "cultivated a strong reputation as an imaginative strategist".

Swidler’s Energy practice was characterized as a "significant competitor with an outstanding

FERC practice." Clients are impressed by the group’s standards of service and satisfied with "the quick turnaround and the quality of work first time around". Kenneth Jaffe, a partner in the Energy group was referred to as "one of the best litigators out there" while Phillip Jordan was praised for his "sound judgment". According to the lawyers surveyed, "he has a diplomat’s personality…".

The Environmental practice at Swidler Berlin is considered "excellent, particularly for legislation issues". According to industry observers, Charles Knauss, a partner in the group, is "a big name at Swidler" and can be "set apart by the depth of his understanding".

Swidler Berlin’s Insurance group is viewed as a "forward-looking group with a focus upon diversification." One client who was interviewed for the rankings report said "It has come out shining. (The group) is very professional, capable and successful operators." Mark Plumer, chair of the group, "understands the big picture" and "is always one step ahead of the other side". David Klein, an insurance partner, is described as "aggressive in the defense of his clients but never goes overboard". Associate Alex Lathrop "has never been found to be wrong" and is developing into a highly effective insurance litigator.

Swidler Berlin’s Telecommunications, Media and Technology practice was especially noted by peers for its traditional representation of new entrants into the telecom market. Andy Lipman, vice chairman of the Firm and chair of the TMT practice, is widely respected for his historical representation of competitive local exchange carriers.
