Guernsey: Carey Group Promotes Three High Achievers
Last Updated: 21 April 2016

A former geologist, photographer and airline worker have all been promoted in the corporate and fund services teams. They are among a number of staff with expertise in other areas that have been attracted to Carey Group in recent years seeking new challenges.

Claire McSwiggan, 31, has been promoted to senior client relationship manager. Having joined the corporate team in November 2014 she provides company secretarial services to a diverse portfolio of companies including businesses listed on a number of stock exchanges worldwide. Formerly, Mrs McSwiggan worked as a geo-environmental consultant in both the oil and the construction industry before retraining as a company secretary.

A second member of the growing corporate team, Emma Cunningham, has been promoted to client relationship manager. Previously working as a photographer, the 31-year-old joined Carey Group in March 2013 to embark on a new career. She manages a diverse portfolio of clients involved in developing real estate assets, listed companies and shipping.

In the fund services team, Jo Hardy has also been promoted to client relationship manager.  The 25-year-old moved to the company from an airline accounting role in December 2013. She manages a portfolio of clients which includes fund management companies and regulated funds investing in real estate, venture capital and private equity.

Managing director Jim Gilligan commented: 'These promotions are very well deserved by these three high performers. We performed extremely well in 2015 with a significant volume of repeat business from existing clients in our corporate, fund and private client teams. These results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of team members like Claire, Emma and Jo.'

Mrs McSwiggan moved into finance following a move to Guernsey where she took up a job as an internal auditor. Soon afterwards she started studying the MSc in Corporate Governance and then transferred into a company secretarial role about a year later.

'I realised this is what I enjoyed – now here I am.'

She completed the MSc in December 2014, with distinction, and is also an Associate Member of ICSA: The Governance Institute.

Commenting on the promotion, she said: 'For me it solidifies the last few years of studying and work, and gave me a confidence boost that I am good at what I do.'

Mrs Cunningham was similarly delighted with her promotion: 'I think it shows how far I have come and how far I have developed since starting at Carey's three years ago, having never worked in this kind of role before.'

Miss Hardy said she moved to Carey Group seeking a new career.

'Working in the fund team seemed like the perfect introduction to the world of finance. I am very grateful that the company recognised how much I have learned and developed in my two years and have offered me this opportunity to develop further.'

All said the variety of work they undertake and the camaraderie among their respective teams were big parts of the appeal of working for Carey Group.

Mrs McSwiggan said: 'It's the type of work and client that we attract that makes Carey Group special. We offer bespoke, high end services which attract interesting and unusual clients.'

All three are undertaking ongoing professional training to further their development.

Miss Hardy is currently studying the Certified Accounting Technician qualification. Last year Mrs Cunningham completed the International Diploma in Financial Administration and she is about to commence the ICSA's Diploma in Offshore Finance and Administration.

Mrs McSwiggan, who alongside her professional qualification has two degrees under her belt, has plans to study law and embark on a PhD.
