Malta: Malta To Host First Ever Mediterranean Leadership Summit Organized By The Economist Events
Last Updated: 15 April 2016

In less than a month's time, Malta will host the most important event that The Economist has organised in the Mediterranean: The Economist's Mediterranean Leadership Summit. The event will take place on the 28th and 29th of April at the Hilton Malta.

The Mediterranean Leadership Summit in Malta comes at a most crucial time, whereby the countries of the Mediterranean are called upon to share their leadership strategy and vision for stability, growth and competitiveness in the region.

The event will see the participation of prominent personalities from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa who will share their expertise and insight on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead on issues that are shaping global developments in politics, finance, business, technology, energy, shipping, tourism, and more.

During the launch of the event at the Ministry for Economy, Investment and Small Business, Minister Chris Cardona stressed how the Mediterranean nations need to come together and collaborate in order to herald an era of new business, investment opportunities, growth, and competitiveness, as well as to secure safe trade routes.

"The last months have showcased Malta's role as a bridge and interlocutor in our Mediterranean via the Valletta EU-African Union summit and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting both held last November. The same spirit will be showcased throughout the term of our Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first part of 2017.

We believe that the time is ripe to create a new Med, not only via political alliances and networks but through economic and entrepreneurial forces," said Minister Cardona.

Chris Munz of CountryProfiler, the national co-organiser representing The Economist events, said that as The Economist continues to develop the Summit in the coming years, regional business leaders will wish to fix an annual April trip to Malta on their calendars as they currently do for their January trip to Davos.

Michel Cordina, Head of Commercial Banking at HSBC Bank Malta, noted that he is honoured to support this prestigious event as it reinforces one of the bank's objectives - that of putting Malta on the map as a place to do business by connecting customers to opportunities and enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper - thus helping HSBC's customers realise their ambitions.

Anton Borg, President of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry, commented that the Chamber – as the local champions for free trade, competitiveness and the pursuit of economic growth – shares the fundamental principles of The Economist. He is confident that the event will have a successful outcome, carrying the prestigious brand of The Economist and a distinguished line-up of prominent speakers from around the Mediterranean.

Included among many others in this exceptional speaking faculty are: two European Commissioners: Maroa `efčovič, VP leading the 'Energy Union' project team, and Karmenu Vella, Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs, and Fisheries; a number of Regional Heads and CEOs of multinational corporations including GE, Siemens, ENI, and Ericsson; founders, Chairpersons, and Presidents of leading Mediterranean companies such as Yildirim Group of Turkey, ETRHB Haddad of Algeria, Orascom Hotels and Development of Egypt, Sigma Investments of Jordan, and Tell Group of the United Arab Emirates; prominent figures from organisations whose decisions strongly impact the future of the Mediterranean including the EBRD, World Bank, and the World Tourism Organisation; and leaders of pan-regional Chambers of Commerce and business persons' associations including Eurochambres, BUSINESSMED and ASCAME.

This full two-day business and policy Summit is being organised by The Economist Events in collaboration with The Government of Malta and is supported by Founding Sponsor HSBC Bank. FinanceMalta is a contributing sponsor.
