The Honourable Gar Knutson, P.C., and Dr. Stephen Andrews join BLG’s Government Relations Group

Toronto, Ontario February 10, 2005 – Sean Weir, National Managing Partner of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, one of Canada’s leading full-service national law firms, is pleased to announce the addition of two professionals, The Honourable Gar Knutson, P.C., and Dr. Stephen Andrews, to BLG’s Government Relations Group.

"We are committed to attracting the best legal talent to serve our clients’ needs, and recognize the importance of a strong national team dedicated to government relations," said Mr. Weir. "Gar and Stephen have extensive experience with legislative initiatives and complex policy issues, that allows them to provide expert insight and analysis to clients."

Borden Ladner Gervais LLP welcomes Gar Knutson to its Ottawa office. Mr. Knutson brings over a decade of experience with the Government of Canada. He served as Minister of State for International Trade for New and Emerging Markets under the Right Honourable Paul Martin, and as Secretary of State in the government of the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, where his primary role was to represent Canada abroad in the form of trade and political missions at a ministerial level. "I am pleased to be part of BLG’s Government Relations team, and look forward to counselling clients on the impacts of legislation to help in determining the appropriate course of action," said Gar Knutson.

BLG also welcomes Dr. Stephen Andrews to its Toronto office. Dr. Andrews has a Ph.D in political theory and a Master’s Degree in social policy. His work will focus on both government relations and energy, as much of his background is related to the electricity sector. Prior to joining BLG, Dr. Andrews held the position of Manager, Communications and Public Affairs at Toronto Hydro, where his responsibilities included providing strategic communications, policy advice and counsel. He has also held several senior policy advisory positions within the provincial government, primarily related to the electricity industry. "Having provided counsel on government relations, policy, and public affairs in both private organizations and government bodies, I look forward to leveraging my previous experiences in my new role at BLG," said Stephen Andrews.

In addition to Gar Knutson and Stephen Andrews, BLG’s Government Relations Group is led by a team of highly experienced professionals across the country including Colin MacDonald, the group’s National Coordinator based in Calgary, Robert Fyfe in Montréal, Marc Jolicoeur in Ottawa, Jeffrey Graham in Toronto, and Royce Frith and Dirk Laudan in Vancouver. The Group represents clients in their relations with governments in Canada at all levels - Municipal, Regional, Provincial and Federal, and with Departments, Boards, Authorities and Agencies of each of those Governments.
