United States: SGR Welcomes Thomas Backes As An IP Associate
Last Updated: April 13 2016

Smith, Gambrell & Russell (SGR) is pleased to announce that Thomas Backes has transitioned from a part-time Technical Advisor to a full-time associate in the firm's intellectual property (IP) practice in its Atlanta office.  Mr. Backes focuses his IP practice on patent prosecution and aiding clients in enforcing their intellectual property rights.  Mr. Backes assists clients with drafting patent applications and corresponding with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and he provides counsel to his clients in all aspects of foreign and domestic patent prosecution, and other USPTO proceedings.  He also assists clients with non-infringement, invalidity, patentability, and freedom to operate opinions.

Mr. Backes received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering, M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, M.S. in Industrial Engineering, and an MBA from Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). He received his Juris Doctor degree from the John Marshall Law School, and he is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech, a degree he is expecting to receive during the Summer of 2016.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Backes served as a research engineer at Georgia Tech, a researcher with Bell Labs and the US Army Research Labs, a consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, and received a NASA GSRP fellowship.  He was also a co-founder of VersaQ, an RF electronics design and technology company that was later acquired.

"Thomas has an impressive technical background, and we've enjoyed having him work with us since the Fall of 2014 as a Patent Technical Advisor", said Greg Kirsch, the Head of the SGR IP Department.  "Now that he's transitioned to becoming a full-time associate with the firm, we look forward to having him put his technical and patent legal skills to work for even more clients."
