United States: Noted Pillsbury Winthrop Business Attorney Appointed to Two Major Commerce Advisory Committees
Last Updated: January 26 2005

Tannon to serve on both Services Advisory Committee of U.S. Trade Representative and Southern Technology Council

Washington D.C.– U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick and Virginia Governor Mark Warner have each independently appointed Pillsbury Winthrop LLP corporate and international transactions attorney Jay M. Tannon to serve on commerce advisory committees.

Tannon has been tapped by Ambassador Zoellick to serve on the Services Advisory Committee to the United States Trade Representative. At the same time, he has been selected by Governor Warner to represent the Commonwealth of Virginia in the Southern Technology Council, a group devoted to promoting high-tech industry in the Southern states.

Tannon was chosen for both positions based on his recognized experience in supporting regional, national and international business and trade. He has spoken frequently on U.S. trade policy and international business transactions. He has also participated in trade missions to China, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Czech Republic.

In addition, Tannon serves on the International Business Exchange Council of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, the Private Equity Committee of the Northern Virginia Technology Council, and was a multiple term Chairman of the Kentucky World Trade Center and Kentucky District Export Council. At Pillsbury Winthrop, he leads the Corporate and Securities Practice in Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia.

"I am honored by these recent appointments, which reflect my long-standing commitment to international trade and business development. As circumstances warrant, I plan to draw on the strengths of Pillsbury Winthrop in trade and technology in fulfilling these new responsibilities," commented Tannon.

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative develops and coordinates U.S. trade policy and represents the U.S. in trade negotiations. The Advisory Committee for Services provides private sector input on proposed bilateral and multilateral agreements and other international trade matters that affect the services sector of the U.S. economy.

Other members of the Services Advisory Committee include representatives from some of the country’s leading corporations and institutions including Time Warner, Goldman Sachs, AIG, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and General Electric.

For his role with the Southern Technology Council, Tannon will offer business development counsel on behalf of Virginia to promote expansion of technology business in Southern states. Council members consist of prominent science, technology and economics professionals from more than a dozen of the Southern states. Virginia ranks among the national leaders in the nature and number of technology jobs.

The Council’s primary goal is to encourage technological development and innovation for the purpose of expanding the Southern economy. Members of the Council meet several times per year and produce a variety of publications annually on such issues as Southern entrepreneurship, research and development in the South, and studies regarding Southern technological and economic trends.

"Apart from his extensive corporate transactions work, Jay has shown an extraordinary dedication to supporting international trade efforts, exemplified by his work leading overseas trade missions and his advisory work here in the States," said Thomas Flaherty, managing partner of Pillsbury Winthrop’s Northern Virginia office. "We expect with these two senior advisory roles Jay will help advance U.S. trade and the South’s growing technology industry."
