Canada: Meet Jana McLean, Our Newest Environmental Lawyer
Last Updated: March 17 2016

We are pleased to introduce Jana McLean, the newest lawyer to join our Responsible Resource Development and First Nations Business Development teams.

Jana has extensive litigation and regulatory experience in the areas of environmental and First Nations law.  In her 15 years of practice, she has advised in the areas of contaminated sites, environmental assessments, water law, fisheries law and Aboriginal rights and title.  She regularly assists clients in navigating regulatory requirements at all stages of project development and operations.

"It is a real coup for MT+Co. that Jana decided to join us", says co-founder Jim Titerle.  "She is a very well-respected lawyer that many firms would give their right arm to have working with them.  She brings experience and expertise in areas that compliment our existing First Nations and Responsible Resource practice areas – and she's a lovely person to boot."

Jana's professional highlights include acting for:

  • the successful plaintiff in the largest contaminated sites case ($4.9 million awarded) to be decided under BC's Environmental Management Act;
  • the successful third party in a major appeal before BC's Environmental Appeal Board, which concerned SO2 emissions from a large industrial operator;
  • the independent panel that conducted the environmental assessment of the proposed New Prosperity Mine; and
  • Hereditary Chiefs, a First Nation's treaty organization and Indian Act bands in cases involving Aboriginal rights and title, the duty to consult, Indian Act regulation and governance matters.

Jana has a Masters in Law from the University of Cambridge, UK, and spent 1.5 years in South Africa working with environmental and human rights groups.

Jana's professional interests reflect a life-long passion that she's had for the great outdoors.  Outside of MT+Co., you'll often find Jana tromping around BC's wilderness, pursuing backcountry skiing, trail running and summer hiking adventures.
