Australia: Norton Rose Fulbright wins five deals of the year at IJ Global Asia Pacific awards
Last Updated: 15 March 2016

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright's infrastructure, M&A and project finance capability across Australia and Asia has been recognised with a string of high-profile matters winning the renowned IJ Global's best Asia-Pacific deals of 2015.

Our Australian, Indonesian, Hong Kong and Singapore-based lawyers advised on five of the 14 deals, winning across the ports, telecoms, mining, M&A and refinancing categories. Our work on these deals included advising:

  • the Macquarie-led consortium on its acquisition of Crown Castle Australia's $2 billion mobile telecommunications tower business (best telecoms deal);
  • two of the equity participants in the consortium that purchased Transgrid in the $10 billion-plus privatisation in NSW (best M&A deal);
  • ASX-listed Finders Resources on its US$165 million project financing for the Wetar Copper project in Indonesia (best mining deal);
  • Indonesia Ports Corporation (Pelindo II) on its multi-billion dollar Kalibaru (New Priok) port project in Jakarta (best ports deal); and
  • on the Singapore Sports Hub PPP refinancing (best refinancing deal).

These deals involved teams of lawyers from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Jakarta, Singapore, Hong Kong and also London working across borders and multiple time zones to service clients from around the globe.

The awards come as another Norton Rose Fulbright infrastructure deal – acting for the successful consortium, comprised of funds managed by AMP Capital and Infrastructure Capital Group, in the privatisation of Port Hedland International Airport – reached financial close on March 11.

Norton Rose Fulbright managing partner in Australia Wayne Spanner commented:

"We are very pleased to have been able to support our local and international clients to achieve their business goals in respect of these award winning projects.

"The continuing recognition of our cross-border capability – after being recently awarded the Asia-Pacific PPP Deal of the Year 2015 from Project Finance International (PFI) for advising the financiers to the Sydney Light Rail PPP project – is a testament to our global strategy and the depth and breadth of our experience."

Global head of infrastructure, mining and commodities and Singapore partner Nick Merritt commented:

"These awards are a credit to our project finance and infrastructure capabilities across the Asia-Pacific region and the strength of our team. Having advised on the original financing of the Singapore Sports Hub, which won Asia Pacific PPP Deal of the Year at the Project Finance International awards 2010, it's particularly gratifying to see the refinancing win this year's IJ Global Asia Pacific Best Refinancing Deal."

Australian partner and co-head of infrastructure Jo Crew commented:

"It is fantastic to see so many deals with a close connection to Australia gain recognition in these prestigious Asia-Pacific awards. The $10 billion-plus Transgrid privatisation in NSW and $2 billion Crown Castle Australia telecommunications acquisition are not only great successes for our clients but also demonstrate the depth of our infrastructure, M&A and project finance capability.

"The involvement of our Australian and Indonesian lawyers in advising on the Kalibaru Port project for the Indonesia Ports Corporation (Pelindo II) and the Wetar Copper project for Finders Resources is also another clear illustration of the close working relationships of our teams right through the Asia-Pacific region."
