Australia: Sparke Helmore appoints NMP and Board Members
Last Updated: 14 March 2016

On 1 March 2016, Phillip Salem became Sparke Helmore's National Managing Partner. He took over the role from Jesse Webb, who has moved back into practice as an insurance partner.

"I congratulate Phillip on his appointment and look forward to working with him and the leadership team in driving the firm's growth and achieving our vision," said Mark Hickey, Sparke Helmore's Chairman of Partners.

Phillip, who is based in Sydney, is no stranger to leadership roles in the firm having previously been Chairman of Partners, a board member and National Service Line Leader of Government Commercial Group. In practice, Phillip has advised governments on high profile and complex projects, spanning major procurement projects to Commissions of Inquiry and government asset sales. He is consistently ranked in the AFR's Best Lawyers list for government.

"In announcing Phillip's appointment, I want to express my thanks to Jesse for his outstanding contribution and personal commitment to the firm and its values as our National Managing Partner of nearly seven years. We now look forward to benefitting from Jesse's experience and reputation as an excellent insurance lawyer," said Mark.

Jesse Webb, who has served as the firm's National Managing Partner since 2009, is returning to practice. He has broad experience in insurance and is an accredited mediator.

In other management news, Gillian Davidson and Andrew White have been appointed as Board Members of the firm. Gillian replaces Phillip Salem who has vacated his Board position to take up the National Managing Partner role and Andrew replaces Ben Burney, whose term expired this month.

Gillian is a highly respected Insurance partner who joined the firm in 1998 and leads a number of the firm's most significant insurer client relationships. She completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors course in 2012 and maintains an active role in the community. Gillian is a member of the General Synod of the Anglican Church, a Director of Anglicare Sydney and is the Chair of the Anglican Deaconess Ministries.

Andrew leads our Mining & Resources team, part of the Commercial & Projects Group. He works closely with Hunter region-based mining companies to help them achieve operable, workable and defendable mining approval platforms.
