UK: Lovells Wins Top M&A Prize At The Lawyer Awards
Last Updated: 4 July 2001

International law firm, Lovells, won the award for M&A Team of the Year at last week's awards ceremony hosted by The Lawyer in association with the Bank of Ireland. The accolade is notable for being the second award won by the same team this year – Lovells were also presented with 'Corporate Team of the Year' at the Legal Business Awards in February.

The 'M&A Team of the Year' award was won for the team's role in the highly complex reorganisation of the Granada Group and subsequent consolidation of ITV. Hugh Nineham, head of Lovells' corporate practice, led a team of eight other partners across a range of practice areas. The citation said: "Lovells deserves warm commendation for being able to mesh corporate, competition and tax in one very creative package."

Lovells was a runner up in three other categories. The firm took second place for 'Law Firm of the Year', notably for concentrating on bedding down its Continental European network, and was described as "the best-placed UK international firm outside the magic circle". Lovells also took third place for John Young as 'Partner of the Year', who led the team on the sale of Equitable Life, for his "quiet authority and unparalleled knowledge of the insurance industry"; and for 'Real Estate Team of the Year', for "a year full of innovation" in which it took the lead in property outsourcing, notably with its work for Abbey National. The firm was also shortlisted for Litigation Team of the Year.
