Australia: Two senior lawyers join Sparke Helmore's CTP team
Last Updated: 29 February 2016

Sparke Helmore Lawyers is pleased to welcome Consultants Carl Burraston and Andrea Boyd-Boland to its CTP & Major Claims team in Sydney. Carl advises on CTP claims and focuses on the assessment of damages, negotiation and ADR, claims training and development, and litigation. Andrea advises on CTP disputes and is a nationally accredited mediator.

"We are delighted that Carl and Andrea are joining our CTP team. Their wealth of knowledge and experience will significantly add to our now 20-strong team's expertise," said James Johnson, Sparke Helmore's National Insurance Group Leader.

Carl works with NSW-based and interstate insurers advising on claims, litigation and the impact of, and response to, legislative change. He has practical experience in the management and defence of fraudulent and exaggerated claims, as well as training CTP claims staff in claims management. Carl will be working between Sparke Helmore's Sydney and Newcastle offices.

Carl has joined the firm from Lee & Lyons, where he was a partner and advised interstate clients on NSW medical assessment guidelines and medico-legal/medical issues, and national insurers on group protocols and processes. He was also CTP Manager at a leading Australian insurer, managing product and claims requirements, and establishing CTP medical and legal panels.

Andrea, who has also joined Sparke Helmore (most recently from Lee & Lyons) predominantly works on CTP and public liability matters involving litigation and recovery actions. She was recently appointed to the Law Society's Mediators Panel for 2016-2017.

She has more than nine years' private practice experience in CTP and public liability, having conducted many complex CTP matters involving liability, causation, quantum, infant claims, compensation to relatives claims, blameless accidents and claims involving the Nominal Defendant. She has also conducted major liability claims for catastrophic injuries and fatalities, involving multiple parties and significant liability and quantum issues.

Both Andrea and Carl will be working with Partner Larissa Mepstead. "I'm looking forward to working closely with Carl and Andrea, they will have a key role in growing our CTP and major claims services in NSW and the wider firm," said Larissa.
