France: Latham & Watkins Boosts Finance Team With Senior Hire
Last Updated: 11 August 2004

Dual qualified lawyer joins Latham in Paris reinforcing the firm’s position as a leading international finance practice.

Paris, August 10 2004. Latham & Watkins is pleased to announce that finance lawyer Basil Zotiades is joining the firm as a partner with effect from October 1, 2004. Zotiades, a dual-qualified English solicitor and French "avocat" , is active in a broad area of finance and capital markets, with a particular emphasis on structured finance, across a range of domestic and international transactions.

Joining from the Paris office of Linklaters, Zotiades’ international track record spans eighteen years of which fourteen have been in Paris. Zotiades’ practice is balanced between mainstream capital markets transactions covering equity-linked debt, subordinated debt and high yield offerings, acting for underwriters and issuers, and structured transactions work, including collateralized debt obligation (CDO) structures and leveraged and/or principal-protected hedge-fund linked products.

"We are delighted to welcome Basil to the firm," said Paris Managing Partner Olivier Delattre. "Basil’s reputation further consolidates our position in Europe in capital markets, banking and structured transactions work. He supports our growth strategy in Paris and he will integrate well into our finance teams across the globe."

"Adding Basil to the team is a key step in developing the firm’s structured finance practice in Europe, to equal the great strength we have developed in the States," said John Watson, Co-Chair of Latham’s Global Corporate Department, who has recently relocated to Paris. "We have been progressively building our local team here and the arrival of Basil is further testimony to our commitment to establishing the Latham & Watkins name as a leader in financial products and all tiers of the corporate capital structure in Europe."

"I found Latham’s US credentials, broad reach and strong entrepreneurial culture particularly appealing and am looking forward to contributing, from a European base, to the ongoing development of the Latham international capital markets practice. The cross-border opportunities are immense," said Zotiades.

Zotiades, a Greek national, read law at Hertford College, Oxford and obtained a post-graduate degree in philosophy of law from Paris University in 1985. He qualified as an English solicitor in 1988 and as a French "avocat" in 1993. He is fluent in English, French and Greek. He joined Linklaters in 1986, before moving to the Paris office in 1990, where he became a partner in 1996.

The addition of Zotiades follows hot on the heels of strong growth in recent months: international capital markets lawyer Clark joined the firm as a partner in the London office in May from White & Case; four leading US partners Hanrahan, Mendez, Wicks and Dougherty joined the firm in March from Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom; regulatory finance partners, Brian W. Smith and Timothy Keehan, joined the Washington DC office of Latham in February from Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw.
