China: Dispute Resolution Partner Relocates To Shanghai To Lead China Team
Last Updated: 30 December 2015

Clyde & Co partner Richard Bell has relocated to the firm's Shanghai office from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) operations, where he was predominantly based out of Abu Dhabi heading up the dispute resolution team.

The MENA region is seeing a marked and sustained increase in Chinese-led investment and trade; Richard's move to Shanghai will allow him to act as a key point of connection between China and MENA clients and colleagues.

Richard acts for clients in all areas of dispute resolution and has particular experience in joint venture disputes, property development and infrastructure disputes and disputes arising under franchise, distribution and importer agreements. Richard frequently acts for clients in cross border arbitration proceedings including LCIA, ICC, DIFC/LCIA, DIAC and ad hoc arbitrations.  He also assists clients with court proceedings in overseas jurisdictions and has particular experience in dealing with disputes in difficult jurisdictions and emerging markets.

Ik Wei Chong, Clyde & Co's Shanghai Chief Representative commented: "We are very pleased to welcome Richard to the region. Richard's arrival will drive our effort for China-MENA related outbound work further, and will no doubt bolster our international arbitration practice in parallel with Richard's expertise and Clyde & Co's strength".

The firm recently launched a 'China-MENA' programme which involves a number of partners from the firm's MENA and Asia Pacific offices, including partners Mark Blanksby, Carrie Chen, Chris Jobson, Phil O'Riordan, Justin Tan and Patrick Zheng among others. Other programmes are also underway to connect the firm's Greater China practice with other regions around the world.

Chris Mills, Clyde & Co's MENA Head of Dispute Resolution added: "We see Richard's relocation as an opportunity to bring the firm's dispute resolution capability to another level. While Richard is now based in Shanghai, he will still work closely with the team in MENA and will further bridge the gap between the two regions."

Richard's addition to the team brings Clyde & Co's Greater China partner numbers to 17 and more than 150 staff in total. The firm's Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing and Hong Kong offices operate as an integrated unit with much involvement and interaction between the four offices.
