Canada: Craig Elliott: From Cooks To Books
Last Updated: November 27 2015

Craig attained his CGA designation in 2002, and earned both a diploma in Corporate Finance and a degree in Accounting from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Extremely bright and quick-witted, Craig is known for his passion for higher-education, and completed his MBA in Strategy at Queen's University in 2005 as well as both the CICA Income Tax Practice and CPA Canada's Advanced Tax Issues for the Owner-Manager courses. All fairly par for the course, in the life of a CPA. You might, however, be surprised to learn that Craig is also a certified chef.

Relationships drive Craig's practice and he prides himself on delivering exceptional service that goes beyond clients' expectations. His co-workers appreciate his responsiveness and constant availability. His clients appreciate his commitment to providing innovative solutions to small business owners, start-up companies, high-net-worth individuals and professionals.

We sat down with Craig to talk about his milestones, personal and professional, that have shaped who he is today.

On growing up"I still haven't grown up, and have no intentions of doing so."

On life as a chef"Being a chef taught me patience, stress-management and how to trust my instinct. On one evening alone, I cooked dinner for a former Canadian Prime Minister, an Academy award winning actor and a table of Vancouver Canucks."

On life-changing experiences – "My father's words to me: 'if you want your education paid for, you better do it now so I can retire' were pivotal for me. Although said in jest, they made me rethink my path and change gears. He unfortunately passed away before I finished articling."

On becoming a CPA – "To be honest, at first I became a CPA so that I didn't have to work nights and weekends anymore. Neither of these have proven to be true. Regardless of the occasional late night and weekend, it was a great decision to become an accountant. One that I will never regret."

On joining Crowe MacKay – "I joined the firm in 2005 through the Jones Richards merger. I became an Associate Principal in January 2010 and an Equity Partner in January 2011. Clients choose Crowe Mackay because we are an alternative to the big firms. We can offer the same breadth of services that the big firms offer, while maintaining our small firm feel. At Crowe MacKay we care about our clients and I believe this is evident in how we interact with clients and deliver solutions to their business challenges."

On finding his niche – "I work with owner-managed private companies and their shareholders. I like working hands-on directly with the owners of a business to help them achieve their goals. Solving client's problems motivates me. I really enjoy picking up the phone and hearing a new challenge or opportunity that a client is facing, and then quarterbacking that issue through the firm by utilizing the firm's resources to come up with a unique and creative solution that really adds value to the client's situation."

On giving back – "Currently I volunteer my time to three not-for-profit boards and one committee for our professional association [Chartered Professional Accountants of British Columbia] . Giving back is essential to every professional's personal and professional development. Pick something that you are passionate about and participate. Your return on investment will be immeasurable."

On last words – "If you keep your clients best interests at the forefront of everything you do, you can never go wrong."
