UK: Rainbow Refugees: Protecting LGBTI Asylum Seekers
Last Updated: 4 November 2015

The world is in the midst of a global refugee crisis with some 60 million people displaced by war and violence, more than at any time since the end of World War II.

The UK Lesbian and Gay Immigration Group (UKLGIG) is a unique human rights charity at the forefront of the campaign to protect LGBTI refugees. It is the only national organisation in the UK dedicated to supporting, and advocating for the rights of, LGBTI people fleeing persecution.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people across the world experience discrimination and violence on a daily basis on account of their sexuality or gender identity. At least 77 countries, including many in the Commonwealth, criminalise same-sex acts and homosexuality. The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon, has described this as 'one of the great, neglected human rights challenges of our time.' Despite this, the needs and experiences of LGBTI refugees are often neglected or ignored.

Join us to discuss this topical issue and explore solutions to ensure those who are at risk because of their sexuality or gender identity are protected and treated with dignity and respect.
