United States: Piper Rudnick Is Number One In Real Estate Say Two Leading Legal Publishers
Last Updated: May 26 2004

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 20 – Two leading international legal publishers now place the real estate practice of Piper Rudnick LLP at the top of the profession.

The firm has the premier real estate practice in the United States according to a new survey by the Practical Law Company, one of the leading British publishers in the legal industry. Piper Rudnick received its #1 nationwide ranking in the new Global Counsel Corporate Real Estate Handbook (2004/05), a comprehensive guide to law firms and lawyers in this practice area around the world. The rankings are based on questionnaires and interviews with law firms and clients. Of the 29 law firms ranked in the survey, only Piper Rudnick’s real estate practice received the top tier, #1 ranking.

And, nearly simultaneously, the new third edition of The International Who’s Who of Real Estate Lawyers dubbed Piper Rudnick "the number one firm in the world for real estate legal expertise" and cited 12 of the firm’s real estate attorneys as recommended by their clients and peers--more than any other firm in the world. The International Who’s Who of Real Estate Lawyers identifies top firms and attorneys through a lengthy process of independent research. "It is impossible to buy entry into this publication," said its managing editor, Collum Campbell. "This book represents a truly global, highly qualitative survey of only the best real estate lawyers, based on exhaustive research."

These recognitions come immediately on the heels of a similar event: Chambers and Partners, another prominent legal research firm, named 19 of the firm’s real estate lawyers and ranked the real estate group in the top tier in more states than any other firm in the U.S.

"We are enormously pleased with the recognition our real estate practice is receiving," said Jay Epstien, chair of Piper Rudnick’s Real Estate practice group, himself cited as a leading lawyer by Global Counsel, The International Who’s Who, and Chambers. "We knew that our group, with a national footprint and more than 175 attorneys, was one of the largest in the nation. It is very gratifying to have the skill and experience of our team confirmed by the research. Our goal is to offer clients the country’s foremost problem-solving environment for real estate issues, and it appears the market agrees we are succeeding."

Leading Real Estate Attorneys

Global Counsel cited a total of six Piper Rudnick attorneys as "recognised experts in the field of corporate real estate law."

They are:

Charles Edwards, of the Chicago office, whom Global Counsel describes as "a veteran transactional, development and real estate finance figure considered a leading player regionally";

Mr. Epstien, whom Global Counsel says is "acknowledged regionally as a leading figure for all development and leasing issues";

Frederick Klein, of the Washington, D.C. office, "a broad commercial real estate specialist, but most highly rated for his acquisition and finance expertise";

Michael Meyer, of the Los Angeles office, "undoubtedly regarded as a leading figure nationally for big ticket leasing issues";

Theodore Novak, of the Chicago office. Global Counsel writes: "A premier figure for land use, development and zoning, he is considered a first port of call for the most complex issues"; and

John Whitaker, of the Los Angeles office, "recommended for his broad expertise in real estate sales, acquisitions and redevelopment and zoning matters."

Moreover, The International Who’s Who of Real Estate Lawyers named these 12 Piper Rudnick attorneys as among the best in the world: Stephen A. Cowan and Caryl B. Welborn of the firm’s San Francisco office; Mr. Edwards, Robert H. Goldman, Howard E. Kane, Portia Owen Morrison and Harold B. Pomerantz, all of the Chicago office; Mr. Klein and Mr. Epstien of the Washington, DC office; Mr. Meyer of the Los Angeles office; Martin D. Polevoy of the New York office; and Elliot Surkin of the Boston office.

Individual Offices Highly Ranked

Global Counsel also gave high ranks to the real estate practices in several Piper Rudnick offices around the country.

The firm’s Chicago and Washington, D.C., offices are ranked in the top tier of law firms in the respective regions. In addition, the Boston and Los Angeles offices were recognized in their regions.
