Program Content:

Does your company's federal income tax return follow the book method for recognizing revenue? Should it? FASB recently delayed implementation of ASU 2014-09, the comprehensive new GAAP standard for the determination of revenue recognition from contracts with customers, but that doesn't mean you should delay in evaluating tax revenue recognition methods. We will explore some of the tax revenue recognition rules and explain some frequent fact patterns in which the book and tax results for recognizing revenue may be different. In case a method change is in your future, we'll wrap up with a summary of the new comprehensive procedures that control how and when you may implement a method change for tax purposes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Summarize tax rules related to timing of revenue recognition and deduction of costs related to obtaining and fulfilling contracts with customers.
  • Illustrate the impact of the standard on revenue recognition for tax purposes.
  • Identify steps necessary to change accounting methods for tax purposes under new comprehensive procedures.

Featured speakers:

  • Moderator: Joseph Brown, partner, Strategic Federal Tax Services national leader, Chicago, Ill.
  • Sharon Kay, partner, Washington National Tax Office, Washington, D.C
  • Ellen Martin, senior manager, Washington National Tax Office, Washington, D.C.
  • Moderator: Joseph Parrish, partner, Strategic Federal Tax Services, Raleigh, NC.
