As the market for cross border private placements 'hots up', Latham adds top international lawyer to London team

London May 7, 2004. Latham & Watkins is pleased to announce that international capital markets lawyer Jonathan "Ian" Clark, Jr. is joining the firm as a partner in the London office. Clark advises both private issuers and US institutional investors in cross-border placements of debt and equity securities. His practice includes representing sovereign governments in Eurobond financings and in respect of external debt related issues, as well as advising corporate issuers, underwriters and agents on all aspects of international securities offerings.

"We are delighted to have Ian join us," commented London Managing Partner David Miles. "His experience and reputation will further strengthen our position as the leading cross-border private placement practice in the UK."

"Ian is one of the most experienced and respected private placement lawyers in Europe," said Bernard Nelson, Head of Private Placement Practice at Latham. "Ian has vast experience in doing traditional private placements, as well as placements in the financing of more complex or structured transactions. I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with him again and look forward to his involvement in the advancement of our cross-border practice."

Ian joins from White & Case, where he has practiced since 1987. He is US qualified and has practiced from the London office for the past 15 years. He has extensive experience in global capital markets transactions, having advised on high profile matters in the CIS region, Turkey and the Middle East.

Ian's cross-border capital markets and securities transactions include advising on the first corporate bond issue by a Russian issuer since the 1998 Russian crisis, advising on IPOs by Sabanci Holding and Akbank in Turkey and advising on other international capital market transactions involving companies in Ukraine, Israel, Qatar and Greece. He has also represented sovereign governments in debt restructurings, bond offerings and other matters, including working with Ukrainian, Nigerian, Bulgarian and Egyptian governments.

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to work again with my old friend and mentor," said Clark. "Bernie has a fantastic practice and I am looking forward to working with him to progress that practice, as well as to being part of the ongoing growth and development of the European capital markets practice at Latham."
