Ireland: Walkers Ireland Trainee Solicitors Describe Their Early Career At Walkers (Part Two)
Last Updated: 30 September 2015

As Walkers Ireland is looking to recruit for the 2017 Trainee Programme we thought it a good idea to ask the current trainees about their experiences at Walkers so far. (Part two of two, part one can be found here).

What attracted you to Walkers?

When I decided to make the move back to Dublin after working in London for a number of years, Walkers was a natural fit for me because of its reputation in financial services, an area that I want to specialise in.

The Interview Process

The application process was by way of an application form which I submitted and was followed by two interviews. My first interview was with two partners, and my second was with the Managing Partner and an Of Counsel. At the time, this seemed incredibly daunting but really was just a get-to-know-you style chat!

My Walkers experience so far

All of the trainees receive lots of on the job training and regularly attend seminars given by lawyers in the firm so I feel that I have learnt huge amount in a short space of time. The "buddy system" has helped all of the trainees settle in to life as part of Walkers Ireland - the entire team is very supportive and always ready to listen; there is no such thing as a stupid question!

I was delighted to be able to do a pre-PPC 1 seat in the investment funds department. To date, I have been involved in some really interesting tasks including dealing directly with clients, fund service providers and directors, drafting and amending fund documentation, filing documents with the Central Bank, completing Central Bank application forms and attending board meetings.

It's not all work and no play! In terms of the social side of things, there are regular trainee nights out, as well as quiz nights, wine tastings, summer barbeques, monthly socials in the boardroom, birthday cakes and ice cream afternoons!

What attracted you to Walkers?

Walkers have an excellent reputation, represent high profile clients and deliver the highest standards of work. The overriding reason however that attracted me to the firm was that I believed both myself and Walkers were a great fit for each other.

The Interview Process

It was a very well organised two-stage interview process. My first interview was with two of the firm's partners. They were very friendly and made me feel at ease. They gave me a chance to talk about myself, how I started working in the legal environment, how I developed and where I am now. My second interview was with two more partners, this was a similar style interview but more emphasis was put on my current experience and how I would fit into the firm.

My Walkers experience so far

I started my first rotation in Asset Finance and Aircraft Leasing in April of this year. I work with three partners, three associates and one legal secretary. From my first day at Walkers, I was made to feel an integral part of the team. I have had great transactional exposure where the quality of work is second to none. I have been given great opportunities to develop relationships with clients, service providers and directors which is a significant part of moving transactions forward. I am responsible for drafting and amending security documents, corporates, filing documents and getting them sworn, notarised and apostilled when necessary.

I have enjoyed every second of this experience so far and have gained a wealth of experience. I will be sad leaving this team but at the same time I can't wait to see what my next rotation has to offer.
